Three new species of coral, plus a fourth which was believed extinct, have been discovered in an area of reef near the Galapagos Islands. The finding raises the optimism of the scientists on the resistance of these organisms to the temperature rise in the oceans.

GENEVA. The Amazon Rainforest, Galapagos Islands and Angel Falls Foz de Iguazu Falls are among the 14 most voted candidates in the competition of the "New Seven Wonders of Nature", whose 28 finalists also is the forest of El Yunque.
American enclaves covering 11 countries, some of which are repeated.
The Amazon Rainforest is part of Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, French Guiana, Peru, Surinam and Venezuela, is Angel Falls in Venezuela, the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador; Foz de Iguazu in Brazil and Argentina and El Yunque in Puerto Rico.
The organization divides the 28 finalists into two groups of 14 depending on the number of votes and, according to latest figures, for the first are the Amazon jungle, Angel Falls, the Galapagos and Iguazu Falls, while the second is the Anvil.
Among the 14 most voted are also in the Bay of Fundy, Canada, the Dead Sea in Palestine, Jordan and Israel, the Grand Canyon in America and the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and Papua New Guinea.
That first group of the most popular natural sites so far completed by the Ha Long Bay (Vietnam); Jeita Grotto (Lebanon), Komodo Island (Indonesia), Maldive Islands, the Underground River of Puerto Princesa (Philippines ) and Vesuvius (Italy).
The other 14 finalists will be included in a second group, having received far fewer votes and comprises the Yunque in Puerto Rico, the Black Forest in Germany, Bu Tinah Shoals in the United Arab Emirates, the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland; Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and the forest Sundarbans in India.
In addition, Jeju Island (South Korea), the Masurian Lake (Poland), Matterhorn (Switzerland and Italy) Milford Sound (New Zealand), the mud volcanoes (Azerbaijan) Table Mountain (South Africa), the Uluru (Australia) and Yushan in Taiwan.
A group of 6 experts chaired by former UNESCO chief Federico Mayor, elected on 21 July to the 28 finalists of this contest between 77 candidates shortlisted by millions of Internet users.
From that moment began the process of public voting via the Internet, will remain open until the final list is drawn up in 2011.
The campaign began in 2007 with 440 locations in 220 countries in the jury pool. (EFE) (AFP)
